Born into Billboards

When you talk to Marshall Henderson, you can tell this industry runs in his veins. “On my birth certificate, my dad was listed as the general sales manager of Houston Poster,” he said with a smile. “So here I am, back in Houston.”

Marshall’s story is one of full-circle moments. He grew up surrounded by out of home, swearing he’d never follow in his father’s footsteps - but as many of us know, this business has a way of pulling you back in. “I worked as a poster, ran with the crews, did all that kind of stuff,” he recalled. “And before I knew it, I’d backed into a sales role. Turns out, I was pretty good at it.”

From the Ground Up

Marshall didn’t just learn the business - he lived it. Those early days gave him a hands-on understanding of every part of the process, from real estate to installation to management. Along the way, he found great mentors who helped shape his approach to leadership and growth.

“I’ve had the benefit of learning from some incredible people,” he said, citing industry icons like Marty Williamson, and Claude Williams. “Whenever I start to get off track, I think back to the lessons they taught me.”

Building MH Outdoor

In late 2019, Marshall joined MH Outdoor and soon found himself leading through one of the most unpredictable times in recent memory. But even as the world slowed down, MH Outdoor grew.

“We actually did well during COVID,” he said. “We’d already made some changes and put the right pieces in place. We doubled our net revenue and expanded our inventory by about 25%.”

Marshall credits the company’s structure for much of that success. “We don’t carry debt,” he explained. “That gives us flexibility. When opportunities come up, we can move quickly - and that’s a huge advantage.”

Leading with People First

Ask Marshall what makes MH Outdoor different, and he’ll tell you it’s the people. “I start by hiring the best folks I can find and then get out of their way,” he said. “We become successful by helping those around us become successful. That’s what we do.”

With markets spread across several states, Marshall has embraced flexibility and new technology to keep his teams connected. “Managing that kind of footprint isn’t easy,” he admitted. “But with the right people and the right mindset, we make it work.”

Embracing Change and Looking Ahead

Even after decades in the business, Marshall is energized by what’s next. “I love the evolution happening in out of home,” he said. “Technology, digital, programmatic - it’s exciting to see where it’s all going.”

He’s proof that experience and innovation can go hand in hand. “I’m the guy who can’t get the printer to work,” he joked, “but I still get excited about change. It keeps you sharp.”

Words of Wisdom

Marshall’s advice for newcomers - and a good reminder for all of us - is simple and powerful:

“Be bold. Keep stepping forward. Pour yourself into what you’re doing right now, and when it changes, do the same thing there.”

That steady, positive perspective is what makes Marshall Henderson such a respected leader - and a valued part of our IBO community.

A Final Note

Thank you, Marshall, for sharing your journey and your heart for this business. Your story reminds us all that success in out of home comes down to good people, strong values, and a love for the work we do - together.
